With our reputation as a technical leader in the field of gas cylinder components and accessories, a large gas distributor client approached us to help them transition a plastic valve guard from prototype to production. In addition to outlining their functional requirements, they brought us a drawing showing their initial design concept. After assembling a project team with our sister company PTR Tool & Plastics, to evaluate the design and materials, we recommended a few small design changes to improve functionality and facilitate manufacturing and assembly. We also developed manufacturing and test methods compliant with ISO 11117 and other standards governing valve protection caps and guards.

Plastic construction ensured that this valve protector would never rust or corrode while in service. We developed tooling and process controls for injection molding the components. Injection molding allowed us to easily create the detailed geometry, both accurately and consecutively, at a very fast production rate. Our error-proof manufacturing system included in-process inspections to ensure products conformed to specification. Additional production processes included pad stamping clear and legible identification and regulatory markings.

When completed, the valve guard measured 3.5” O.D x 6.3” in height. By following a robust set of production test and inspection procedures, we upheld tolerances of ±0.002” per the customer specification. With our ability to perform all of the work, from engineering and design to production, marking, and assembly in-house, we delivered the initial 1,500 units on a 12-week timeline. The customer was impressed with the final product, and we continue to work closely with them to make minor adjustments that promote quality, functionality, and economy.
